UnBoxed: Refurbished Epson Stylus Photo 1400

Refurbished Epson Stylus Photo 1400 $53.01

We blogged about this last week, and we were lucky enough to score a refurbished Epson Stylus Photo 1400 for only $159.  We posted here that they were available on the Epson web site for about 24 hrs, and we will continue to update that post if we see them again.

The box was gigantic, and must have cost a fortune to ship.  How Epson can afford free shipping on something like this is beyond us.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that a full set of cartridges for this printer will run you a cool $113.94 (no joke).

Included accessories:

Software bundle – included.

We were surprised to see a copy of Photoshop Elements 6.o for both Mac and PC included with the printer.  Epson states on their website that refurbished printers might not include 3rd party bundled software:

Refurbished products may or may not contain a media pack or the same software package as new models

Glad to see it was included. Both Mac and PC versions on the same CD.

This printer is huge.

The printer is gigantic (has to be to handle 13 x 19 paper sizes).  Our printer looked brand new; no scratches on the casing, and no outside indications of past use.

We put an Epson Stylus C120 on top of the 1400 for comparison:

CD printing.

The Epson Stylus Photo 1400 also supports printing on CDs.  The CD printing tray is very large – about the size of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

Looks brand new.

The inside of the printer looked brand new.  No signs of any use.

Looking where the cartridges will go, and while there are some traces of color from ink cartridges, the nozzles were dry to the touch. Six color cartridges are used with this printer.

Very clean inside.

Looking inside the printer it is very clean.

Under the printhead.

We moved the printhead out of the way so we could see what the underneath looked like.  Again, spotless.

Built-in power cord.

This is actually nice.  The power cord is not removable which means we can’t ever lose it.

USB port.

Why Epson, and most other printer manufacturers, does not include a USB cable for their printers remains a mystery.

Excellent deal!

Very pleased with our refurbished purchase for $159.00.  We sold the overpriced Epson brand ink for $65.00, as well as the included  Photoshop Elements for $40.00, so net price for the printer is $53.01.  Not bad for a printer that costs $300.00 new, and is available now on the Epson web site for $249.00 after instant rebate.  We plan to use a CIS system which will run about $100.00.

If you are looking for a low cost solution to large format printing, the Epson Stylus Photo 1400 is a solid choice (if you can find one).  This printer has popped up on the Epson clearance site twice in the last week, only to be sold out quickly each time, so make sure to check often if you are trying to pick one up.

You can buy one new for $249.99, or try to score a refurb when and if they are restocked at the Epson store.
