Epson Stylus Photo 1400:

Epson Stylus Photo 1400 6-Color Tabloid Size Inkjet Printer.

Best when used with a CI system.

The Epson Stylus Photo 1400 is the best 6-color printer out there, if you like to print big.  There are many excellent reviews on the web, so we re not trying to re-invent the wheel here.  Best one we have seen is here:

We can address the cartridge issue – there are 6 cartridges in this printer.  There is only one choice for ink cartridges for this printer.  The T079 series comprise the six cartridge part numbers.  These cartridges contain a low amount of ink (11ml).  That converts to about $6000.00 per gallon.

Consensus on the web seems to be about 80 large prints per set of ink (you can define large here), but if you are smart about ink usage, you could probably get closer to 120, or at the very least 110.  Cartridge resetter, and good suppliers are important here. Just look online, and estimates on pages per set of cartridges is all over the ballpark, but the average seems to be 80.  Eighty mixed-environment prints from 4×6 up to 13×19 inches which would be $1.50 or so per print.  If you are getting fancy, or if you print 13×19 all the time, look out – your numbers will vary.  Add in the paper cost, and it’s not cheap to print a portfolio.  CI systems are available for the Epson Stylus 1400 series, and while prints will not last 100 years, it will let you print on a budget and make the 1400 a real robust printer.
