All in one 6-color photo printer.  There are many things to like about this printer, but the cartridge situation is not one of them.  Epson ships the RX595 inkjet printer with the T078 series (7ml ink)  inkjet cartridges (6 cartridges, one for each black, cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, and photo magenta).  This printer has been “discontinued” for a while and has been replaced with the Artisan 700, and now Artisan 710 series.

Cartridges:

Another victim of the dual cartridge marketing effort Epson is now focusing on.  This printer can use either a T078 series cartridges (7ml) of ink, or the T077 series cartridge which contains (11ml) of ink.  This is incredibly expensive ink from Epson.  The previous generation of Epson photo printers like the R220, RX600, RX500 had/have cartridges with up to 17ml of ink – both cartridges are similar in shape and size, but Epson has decided that less ink in the cartridge will mean more trips to the store by the consumer.

It’s a great printer, and images are fantastic, but what the hell Epson?  $120.00 for a set of full cartridges?  If you are printing color 8.5 x 11 photos, we estimate you will get about 80 prints from a T077 series cartridge set (if you are lucky) – which comes to around $1.50 per print, just for ink!?  Don’t even think about using this as an everyday printer – not a good idea…

CI Systems available:

The good news is, continuous inking systems (aka: CIS, CISS, or Bulk Ink) are available for this printer and we suggest you get one – or go broke trying to print.

Has all the bells and whistles – no networking built-in which seems to be a standard feature with today’s newer printers.

• 2.5 inch color “preview” LCD for printing w/out a computer
• Epson claims 11 seconds for 4×6, and 38ppm for text, but that is a complete lie.  This printer is nowhere near that fast out of the lab.
• Tray for printing on printable CD or DVD media
• 6-color photo printer (6 individual ink cartridges)
• Print resolution – 5760 x 1440 optimized dpi
• Hardware scanning resolution 1200dpi, 48-bit color
• All standard paper sizes, user definable (banner paper) – as small as  3.5 inch wide x 44 inch in length
• Holds 120 sheets plain paper – 20 sheets premium glossy
• Weight – 19 pounds, and size when printing is 17.7″ x 21.0″ x 11.1″

Nice printer, but the ink costs just kill it.  Outstanding photo prints on photo paper.  Plain paper prints are meh.  Text documents and even mixed color docs all look great.  With a CI system, or aftermarket inks this is a great photo and every day printer – with Epson inks, use sparingly.
